It is the perfect destination for a romantic honeymoon or an ideal vacation. It is the firm favorite for the holidaymakers from across the world. Each year thousands of tourists from all over the world visit Goa. Beaches here are quite versatile by nature. From hippy parties all along night to the silent and lonely world, beaches here offer all kinds of atmosphere to the visitors. Some of the beaches are commercialized and have all kind of upmarket, massage parlours, gyms, night clubs and while in some there is no sign of habitation. Most of the beaches organizes water sports like parasailing, jet skiing, windsurfing and boating. One interesting fact about beaches is most of them have been named after the closet villages.

Anjuna Beach:

It is often regarded as mother of all beach in India itself. This beach was discovered sometimes around 50’s and 60’s by the group of travelers and since then have become ideal destination of every holidaymakers who visits Goa. With calm waters of Arabian sea slowly waving around the shore, this beach is most famous for its full moonlit hippie parties. Specially during Christmas and new year time this place is full of parties. Parties are mostly centered around Shoe bar which is in the middle of beach. Anjuna beach is so large that it has been divided into north, south and middle. Majority of bars, hotels and restaurants are in north Anjuna, in the middle Anjuna there is flea market and in south is Little Anjuna beach. Flea market is held every Wednesday, where one can buy traditional Gujarati, Kashmiri and Tibetan handicrafts. One can have delicious Goan cuisines beginning from mouthwatering prawns to heavenly pork vindaloo. For sightseeing in Anjuna there’s Albuquerque mansion which was built in 1920, another being Mascarenhas Mansion which has beautiful balconies. Chapora fort gives it a historic angle. They say party never ends in Anjuna beach, only condition is that sooner you grove into the party mood.

Calangute Beach:

This is beach also known as ‘Queen of Beaches’ offers you the calm serenity to escape from party land Anjuna. This beach was first spotted by hippies in the 60’s and very soon it became very popular. By 70’s many European tourists started flocking here. Many Bollywood stars too have been charmed by this beach. Superstar Raj Kapoor got inspiration for his movie ‘Bobby’ after visiting this beach. Pristine surroundings and golden sands gives this place a stunning view. Unlike Anjuna here bars closes by ten pm with only few hippie joints remain opened. So, there is hardly any nightlife in Calangute. It is not the ideal place for those party animals. It is one of those beaches which offers lot of water sports. One can go for parasailing, water sailing, water skiing and bump rides. Some boat operators offers dolphin and crocodile spotting trips, island trips and fishing expeditions. One lazy around sun bathing or walk in the calm demeanor of this beach. Church of St. Alex is one of the must see place of this serene beach. One cant dare to amiss hundred of stalls in beach selling different varieties of sea food. This beach is popular among all group of people including many family visitors.

Baga Beach:

Baga is small beach located between its more illustrious cousins Colva and Calangute on either side. This beach is an extension of Calangute and it is hard to make out where one ends or begins. Best thing about Baga is its less crowded than its nearby beaches. The meeting of Baga river and sea here is an stunning sight. As white waves gushes through brown sand to wash your feet marks,a calm feeling will swallow you. It is the best place for restful moments if you want to get away from the hustle-bustle of Calangute and Colva beach. With its uncrowded nature this beach is popular among those tourist who wants to pursue their hobbies. Fishing and water sports is the most popular one.

Colva Beach:

Colva is one of the longest beach stretching around 25 km along the Arabian Sea. It has large presence of coconut palm along its coastline. This beach had the distinction of being retreat zone of the high society of Margoa during pre-colonial era. Few can match the scenic beauty of Colva with sky, sand and land blending a enigmatic natural beauty. This beach gained popularity quite late compared to other beaches of Goa. But off late it has emerged as the major tourist attraction of the South Goa. It is the perfect place for those who seek solitude in their holidays. There is long mile of virgin territory comprising of soft sands, shining sun and music of the waves. Just grab your favorite book and tie the swing net in between coconut tree and laze around in the calmness. Even though lots of foreign and tourist from rest of India throng this beach, it is very popular among the locals. Bull fight which takes in old rice field with no barricades is another showpiece of Colva beach. With local Konkani music playing and lots of local humor, bull fights usually takes place from October to May end.

Condolim Beach:

Starting from Fort Aguada and merging with Calangute beach towards end, it is one of the longest beach located in north Goa. This beach is quite peaceful and is very popular among the foreign tourists. This beach is quite long and straight and is backed by scrub covered sand dunes which is very popular among the tourists. A lot of tourists from Pune’s Rajneesh ashram visit this beach, yoga and meditation is also popular activity on the beach. Village Candolim is known for fishing. You can either request and join the villagers in their fishing expedition or go fishing on your own. Here nightlife is almost non-existent. Fort Aguada, Chapel of St. Lawrence and Condolim church are some of the major tourist attractions. Being less crowded this beach is best place to try out water sports. This is place where first revolt against Portuguese erupted.

Benaulim Beach:

This is the place to get closure to the nature and remain totally untouched. It is one special place for Christians as it the birth place of venerable Father Joseph Vaz. The best thing about Benaulim is its still an undiscovered beach. Unlike other beaches commercialization has not creped yet. This is the best place for sun bathing and getting tanned. One can go for swimming too. Though its quite beach during evening and weekend it can get crowded with locals pouring in. The main attraction of this beach is dolphin spotting trips. It is pretty cheap too. Church of St. John Baptist situated atop hill is the ideal place to visit in Benaulim. Water sports like parasailing, jet skiing and wind surfing is available too.

Dominating the harbour front at Kyrenia in North Cyprus, Kyrenia Castle is regarded by many as one of the most photogenic castles in Southern Europe. It dates to the 7th Century – a time when this Eastern Mediterranean island was extremely vulnerable to raids from nearby Arab lands. Impressive fortified walls and towers jut out seawards in defence of the harbour, which today is scattered with small fishing boats and visiting yachts. It provides a fitting prelude to a dramatic encounter with Cypriot history.
Inside the Castle

The entrance to Kyrenia Castle is to the north-west. Visitors cross a narrow walled bridge that spans the moat. A dark entrance tunnel beckons. Inside, a vaulted corridor leads off to the Castle’s Byzantine church – the first major point of interest. The church originally existed outside of the castle’s walls. When the Venetians took Cyprus in 1489 however the walls were extended and refortified to better protect this Christian place of worship. The church now is in good condition, having been recently restored.

From the church the grounds of the ruined castle open out to walls and walkways around the interior of the site. Foundation stonework marks the areas of the Hall, Guard House, Rooms and Living Quarters in the Castle. The Living Quarters are of special note as they house the Shipwreck Museum where you will find perfectly preserved remnants of one of the world’s oldest trading ships, which sank off the coast in around 300 BC.

Steps in several places lead up to the Castle’s towers and wall walks, from where visitors get a different perspective of the Castle interior, and some excellent views of the town and harbour. Special events sometimes take place within the Castle grounds, so don’t be too surprised if you find temporary seating structures occupying part of the place!
Getting to Kyrenia

Kyrenia is located on the coast approximately 35kms from the only airport in North Cyprus at Ercan near Nicosia, which operates flights in and out from Turkey. Northern Cyprus car hire can be arranged to pick up at the airport. A road map with directions to Kyrenia will be provided for you by the car hire company. Signposts are in Turkish and English. Look for directions to Girne or Kyrenia.

La Huerita asked:

It’s all about beaches and ocean in Puerto Peñasco. Sandy beaches, rocky beaches, beaches for swimming, shelling or just bumming around. There is wind surfing, fishing, sailing, or jet skiing, and tide pools to explore when the tide is out. With miles of beaches available stretching from northwest to southeast of the town, whatever you want from a beach you can find here.

Note that in Mexico all beaches are are, by law, open to the public. Along the beaches of Rocky Point there are rarely any lifeguards available, so although the water is generally very safe for swimming, do take reasonable precautions. The best swimming is from May through October, as it is generally too cold for swimming during the winter months. And remember: all vehicles are prohibited on the beaches of Puerto Penasco.

You will find many references to beaches in the region as being “west” or “east” due to the way the land curves away as you head south. For instance, Playa Encanto and Playa La Jolla might be described as “Eastern beaches” while Sandy Beach is a “Western beach”. I find that somewhat confusing, though, so in case it confuses you, too, I will be describing the beaches as going from north to south, as indeed they ultimately do. To the right is a Google-earth satellite view showing the general lay of the land.

I’ll start this description of Rocky Point’s beaches at the northern end with Pelican Beach and head south as far as Playa San Jorge.

Pelican Beach: Beginning north of town are the beaches fronting the Laguna Shores and Laguna del Mar developments, which are located along the curve of Cholla Bay. These 2 masterplanned developments share a pristine estuary teeming with wildlife– bring your binoculars and camera! (Future plans for this area also include the Laguna del Sol and Marina Real communities.) Part of the larger Estero La Cholla (pictured at the top of this post), you are encouraged to help keep this estuary as clean and pristine as it is today. You know: “Take only pictures and leave only footprints”. Pelican Beach (so called because of the number of brown pelicans that hang out in the area) is located near the bottom edge of Laguna del Mar. It is a good place to go clamming or crabbing. This lovely stretch of beach curves to the southwest until it reaches the little jut of land where the La Cholla community is found. From the main highway north out of town, take the clearly marked turn off going to Laguna Shores/Laguna del Mar.

La Cholla (sometimes spelled La Choya): La Cholla is the oldest established foreigner-dominated enclave in the area. Set at the end of a little peninsula that juts like a finger into the Sea of Cortez at the southern end of Cholla Bay and Laguna del Mar, there is not much in the way of sandy beaches here. Probably the best one is called Tucson Beach. Though small, Tucson Beach offers calm water for wading and swimming when the tide is in. It also affords easy launching and retrieval of watercraft if you happen to be living or renting in the area and have a boat.

This peninsula is often called Pelican Point. Its rocky shores are part of a submerged 15-mile reef, and when the tide goes out it goes waaaay out! This is an advantage, however, for anyone who loves to explore tide pools, and due to the prevailing on-shore winds and shallow water it is excellent for kite sailing. This is also a great fishing spot for red snapper, whitefish, halibut, gold spotted bass and black sea bass! Don’t count it out.

Sandy Beach (Playa Arenosa): At the southern edge of the La Cholla peninsula begins the miles-long sweep of Sandy Beach. The construction along its edges (Sandy Beach Resorts) is the first thing you see when approaching town; you can see the highrise condos from 10 to 15 miles out. There are a lot of activities available at this beautiful beach area, including swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, water skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, surfing, fishing, clamming, or just basking in the sunshine. The crescent-shaped beach has miles of largely undisturbed sand dunes flowing inland. At its southern end it merges into Playa Bonita, and the two areas share many attributes.

Playa Bonita/Playa Hermosa: Playa Bonita/Playa Hermosa sweeps from the bottom of Sandy Beach in a great arc southward to the Peñasco del Sol resort area of downtown and is the main beachfront for that area. Technically an extension of Sandy Beach, this beautiful stretch of beach is loved by both locals and visitors, with easy access throughout most of its length. When the tide is very low the seaweed, rocks and tide pools are exposed. This provides a perfect time to explore the pools for the strange and wonderful variety of marine creatures that live there. Kids of all ages love this, but do be careful what you touch.

At the northern end of this beach you will find the well-established Playa Bonita and Laos Mar hotels. Anchoring its southern end, as already mentioned, is the Peñasco del Sol (formerly Plaza Las Glorias). Within walking distance of the Peñasco del Sol are many shops and restaurants, which makes this a very popular location. On a busy day, parking anywhere near it can be challenging. This is also where the rocky area of the beach that circles most of the town begins.

Mirador Beach: Located right around the corner from Old Port’s Malecon, this is the closest beach to the oldest parts of downtown Rocky Point. Comprised of both sandy and rocky shores, it is only about three blocks south of the Peñasco del Sol. Besides having the advantage of an excellent beach and superior tide pooling when the tide is out, this area is home to many of the town’s favorite night spots such as Manny’s, Pink Cadillac, the Pithaya, and Baja Cantina. Mirador is Spring Break country, the center of action for partying for the young crowd every spring. The process of sprucing up the Mirador area is well underway, with upscale mixed use development planned for the area.

Las Conchas: Las Conchas is a 6-mile-long straight stretch of beautiful, pristine beaches with low bluffs and big sand dunes punctuating its length. Located along the northwestern shores of the Morua Estuary, this beach is mostly sandy and shallow; you can walk way out in many places even when the tide is not out. Excellent for shore fishing and shelling (and star gazing at night).

Playa La Jolla: Located at the East Beach development area, about 15 minutes south of town by car and separated from Las Conchas’ beach by the mouth to the Morua Estuary. Playa La Jolla offers a perfect place to take in the sun, go for a walk, collect shells and enjoy the scenery and serenity. While close to town, it is not uncommon to find yourself almost alone on this beautiful beach. The beach here is wide, sandy, and rock free.

Playa Encanto: Ditto Playa La Jolla, which essentially shares the same beach with La Jolla, and you already know what this beach area is all about. Both are excellent for shelling, so bring along a baggie to save your treasure in.

NORTH BEACH: North Beach is a development area that has been very controversial for a decade, and the controversy continues to this day. You can find out more about the real estate debacles there via Google, but for our purposes I will say only that the beaches are outstanding. Playa Dorada and Playa Miramar are two of the beaches/developments in this area.

Playa Dorada: Playa Dorada is almost a 30 minute drive from town. Like most of the beaches in the area it is wide, sandy, and covered in shells– some of them HUGE. If you like deserted beaches and quiet, you can’t go wrong with Playa Dorada.

Playa Miramar: Ditto Playa Miramar, just below Playa Dorada and sharing all of the latter’s attributes.

Mayan Palace: Located in the La Pinta Estuary, at kilometer 24 along the Peñasco – Caborca highway (a 30 to 40 minute drive), this massive resort development has about 2 miles of unspoiled beachfront. Located along the La Pinta Estuary, this place is an ecological haven for marine creatures and birds and has excellent shelling. On the southeastern part of the beach, about a mile from the resort, many sea creatures can be found during low tide, along with huge, hand-sized shells. The sand is also great for building sand castles.

Playa San Jorge: Just across the bay from the new Mayan Palace Resort, where the land curves more toward the south, is the San Jorge Estuary, with beaches that rival those of its neighbor. Though there is some development in the area, if you make it all the way down to Playa San Jorge you can be assured of isolation, if that is what you desire. Bring your own shade, water and plenty of sunscreen. And don’t forget your binoculars (for bird and critter watching) and camera. This is what beaches are all about.

And there you have it. Enjoy the fabulous beaches of Rocky Point, Mexico!

David Mutlow asked:

There’s a bee in my oily mousaka! It’s not moving. It just slid off onto the plate in its own pool of Olive Oil. I ought to complain, but after a week in this undiscovered backwater of Corfu I had become used to the enterprising antics on Myrtiotissa beach. With characteristic gusto Yannis solves my problem with a finger and thumb. “Its one of mine” says Yannis “I keep them up in the cliffs in hives and sell the honey” pointing to his jam jars. “They just want their honey back”

Yannis shack; of bamboo, elephant grass and driftwood is situated on Myrtiotissa beach on the west coast of Corfu. Myrtiotissa beach is not easy to find a driftwood sign nailed to an olive tree was my only clue. Walking down a dirt track meandering between the olive trees I found myself standing on a cliff overlooking a tranquil bay. Fresh water from the 200ft cliffs trickled over the rocks and down onto the beach below. Looking out to the west I could see a clear blue horizon Italy being 70 miles away. Myrtiotissa beach lacks the commercialization found on Corfu’s other beaches its isolated location means a walk of at least half an hour is needed to get down to the beach. However commerce is vibrant, its northern end is for clothed or partially clothed sun seekers but its southern end is where the backpackers, travellers and the islands gypsy minded residents reside. A hippy persona emanates everywhere. Artists selling their paintings, jewellery and friendship bands sit naked in the sand sheltering from the sun. Everyone is brown, a procession of bathers walk from the mirror sea to the fresh water shower flowing from the cliff onto the beach. Many using olive oil to enhance their tan whilst others play beach ball in their birthday suits.

As unspoilt beaches go, Myrtiotissa beach is hard to beat. Sheltered on three sides by vertical cliffs with a snake path that no vehicle can follow, its fine sandy beach gently slops into the sea. Standing at the waters edge toes disappearing into the sand I find Joanne (Yannis wife and rival to Ursula Andress in Dr No’) back from her afternoon diving adventure displaying a pile of black urchins glistening in the sun, a real pain if you stand on one and Joanna’s self-appointed mission to rid these pests from the beach. Opening one Joanna shows me the orange food inside then eats it raw passing some to me. Tasting similar to mussels I was pleasantly surprised.

Brown bodies abound I could still distinguish between Germans, Scandinavian and Brits. The Italians are a category apart; cultural backgrounds can manifest themselves even on a nudist beach. Fashion conscious Italians, beer swilling Scandinavians, territorial Germans and lobster coloured Brits can be distinguished with ease. Yet the difference between the residents and hardcore travellers was harder to judge. ‘The best time to get to know who’s who is in the evening” says Joanna. “As quite a few sleep on the beach overnight.”

As the sun gets low in the sky the day visitors begin to leave, a precession of coloured garments snake there way slowly up the winding path and disappear from view. “Quality time” as Joanna described it, starts about now.

Ambling along the waters edge, wearing a sarong in ‘Beckham style’ I stumble into the travellers’ encampment hidden from view of the main beach. Attracted by the aroma of grilled fish, life here looked primitive, yet I could see there were plenty that had chosen to camp on the beach for weeks. Familiar faces sitting in the shade only hours before were grouped around a campfire. Rhythms of ‘Cat Stevens’ strummed on a guitar mingle with the evening heat. Sleeping bags arranged in groups, logs arranged around the campfire all were changed and ready for the evening to come. At such a perfect moment it seemed a shame to leave.

Getting there from Corfu Town & airport.

Myrtiotissa beach is 15km west of Corfu town. Take the Glyfada (Via Vatos) green/cream bus (45mins) from the New Port central bus station in Corfu Town and ask for Myrtiotissa beach bus stop (40 mins), you will be dropped of by the side of a road next to an Olive grove with a dirt track. Follow the signs to the beach (The last bus back to Corfu town is 20:30). If you take a car make sure you park in the parking place half way down the dirt track in the olive grove. Beyond the parking area the dirt road becomes really steep a 1in3 incline. Taxis direct from the airport can cost up to 40 euros so ask the price first and then haggle. The Green Bus station from the airport is 4 km so a local bus to the bus station is needed.

Sleeping on the beach…

In Greece, it’s illegal to camp on a beach as there is no revenue earned through its tourism, at Myrtiotissa those that chose to sleep overnight on the beach take their tents down during the day and only put them back up in the dark, others just have their sleeping bags and netting. Myrtiotissa’s isolated location makes the policing of unofficial campers, difficult. As long as no tents are seen it’s possible to become one with the beach and the sea without paying for any accommodation.

Accommodation…

Panorama rooms. Are located in an olive grove at the top of the cliff, overlooking the sea and a 5-minute walk from Myrtiotissa beach. The accommodation is private but you share the communal showers and kitchen. On the main road 300 yards north/south of the bus stop are a lot of apartments to rent. Villa Myrto, Villa Natassa and Villa Capella are only just a few of them. They offer average to high standards.

http://www.panorama-rooms.gr

panoramarooms@yahoo.gr

Vatos Camping is a 30 min walk from the beach and on the outskirts of Vatos village. (The same Corfu-Glyfada bus takes you there) They provide free regular coach transport to Glyfada beach stopping at Myrtiotissa from their campsite.

Tel 0030 26610 94503

Eating out & nightlife…

Mythos bar, Labis bar, Spiros 97 are all within a 30 min walk from the beach and are located in and around Vatos village. There is a local disco ‘Pam Pam’ (Operated by Vatos camping) that opens from July.

If you are planning a trip to the shore, one of the most important things to bring is your beach towel. Beach towels give you a comfortable place to sun bathe, a sand-free place to picnic, and a way to dry yourself off after a dip in the water. Whether you’re enjoying a roasted pig on Hawaii’s beautiful shoreline or you’re getting a bronze tan along the beaches of Mexico, you can bet that your beach towel will always come in handy when outdoors. Beach towels come in many sizes, styles, and designs, including nice big beach towels for the whole family, cute hooded towels ones for the kids, and trendy towels for teens. If you have a big family or spend a lot of time at the pool, buying wholesale beach towels in bulk will save you a lot of money. Read on to learn more about discount beach towels and how you can get cheap wholesale beach towels.

What are wholesale beach towels?

You can buy wholesale beach towels in bulk a discounted price. Wholesale vendors usually sell large batches of goods at a lower price. Retail stores then markup these bulk towels to make a profit. Thanks to the ease of Internet shopping, you can buy wholesale towels online in bulk or search for closeout deals in the off season. Consider quality when purchasing wholesale beach towels. How soft and absorbent is the beach towel? Higher thread count towels tend to feel more luxurious. Most towels are made from cotton or a blend of cotton and other synthetic fibers. Egyptian cotton is one of the finest towel textiles and Turkish cotton is also gaining prestige. Many environmentally-conscious consumers are also searching for eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton. Textiles made from bamboo are both earth-friendly and naturally anti-bacterial.

Why buy wholesale beach towels?

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of buying wholesale beach towels is the discounted price. The money that you save from buying cheap beach towels can go into your savings account and cover your little extra vacation expenses, like a decadent dessert or a special souvenir. Buying beach towels in bulk is also more convenient. Buy beach towels in bulk from a wholesale shop and you’ll be stocked up for several seasons. You can even get beach towels in bunches to supply your entire family with matching towels on your next outing. Summer camps, beach clubs, and swim teams may also need a large volume of identical beach towels. Retail stores may not have enough stock to supply the order and you would have to pay full retail price. If you purchase wholesale beach towels instead, you will be able to fill your entire order and get the discounted beach towels for a great deal. Companies and organizations can even buy wholesale beach towels and have a logo added. Personalized wholesale beach towels make a fun giveaway item or party favor at company picnics or beach parties.

How can you buy wholesale beach towels?

You will find a number of vendors that sell wholesale beach towels at discount prices. Research the Internet to select the right type of beach towel and then search online wholesalers to find the best deal on cheap beach towels. Comparing prices online is a good money saving strategy. Many wholesale shops sell directly through the Internet, even offering online product catalogs that you can easily browse through. You can also find discounted beach towels from online classifieds and e-commerce shops. No matter what your needs, wholesale stores can supply you with the perfect beach towels at just the right price.

According to the State Park regulation Nudity is illegal at state beaches in Hawaii. Nudism around the beaches is most of the areas of the world. If you don’t find complete nudism you can still find at least topless people sunbathing, on both public and private area of the beaches. Most of the resorts around the beaches now cater for millions of sun-loving naturists each summer throughout the Mediterranean, Atlantic, Caribbean, Mexico and beyond. You can find some beaches around South Pacific region of the world where legal nude is allowed. You can find nudism around the beaches when Hawaiian people has been believed to be migrated.

Still there are certain beaches in hawaii region where you can still find nudity, topless, naturist, people.

Honokohau Harbor Beach, Hawaii : This beach is located in the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park in the Kona Coast, and it is in the north of Honolokohau Harbor off Highway 19. In the north end you can find Yellow sand beach which is mostly popular for its Gay beach. Privacy is not easy to find here, and Federal Park rangers over and over again patrol to enforce and prohibit on nude sunbathing at Honokohau Harbor Beach. However due to its warm climate and good snorkeling condition, this remains a very popular nude beach.

Little Beach at Makena (Pu’u Ola’i Beach), Maui It is one of the unofficial topless, nude beach in Maui’s region of Hawaii. Little Beach is very near to Makena Beach also know as Big Beach, but you cannot access Little beach by car Life-long nudists, newcomers, and people from all walks of life enjoy the beauty of Little Beach. Little beach is one of the most crowded beach in Hawaii region. Little beach is around 1.8 Mile long. Little Beach is also known as Pu’u Ola’i Beach. This is, perhaps, the best spot in Hawaii for nude sunbathing. The swimming and snorkeling are excellent. There are very less facilities at little beach. Activities on Little beach are Sundays there’s fire dancing and a drum circle starting in the late afternoon and culminating at sunset.

Papohaku Beach In Molokai region there are no beaches which are unofficially designated as clothing-optional. Molokai is the least visited by tourist in the main Hawaiian Islands - not including Kaho’olawe which is closed to the public. This is not to say that you will not be able to find a long stretch of beach that will be yours alone and provide an opportunity for nude sunbathing. This beach extends over three miles of coastline and is more than 300 yards wide. If you want a private, secluded and beautiful beach, Papohaku is for you. Strong tradewinds coming from the west can whip up the sand along this long beach making it quite uncomfortable during windy weather. Papohaku is good for snorkeling and diving.

For complete list of other nude beaches you can find at Hawaii Nude Beaches

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has been welcoming families to its 42 acre site on the South Promenade for over one hundred years. You might be forgiven for thinking that, during that time, its popularity may have waned and what we are now left with is some clapped out relic of more halcyon days; a reminder of what Blackpool used to be rather than a powerful reminder of how good Blackpool still is.

For those who haven’t been in a while it’s worth remembering that Blackpool remains the most popular seaside resort in Europe. And it’s popular in so many different ways with so many different age groups that there has to be a reason for it still to be riding high when so many other British seaside towns have faded into a sad obscurity – it’s not like everybody just turns up for the chips.

Forget the sometimes negative publicity of the past few years. Blackpool has worked, and is working, hard to grow its appeal with the family again. It’s why Blackpool Tower and Circus, Blackpool Zoo, Sea Life Centre and the Sandcastle Waterworld are all so popular after facelifts over the past few years. But it’s still very much the case that even an attraction as historic and renowned as the magical Blackpool Illuminations serves only as a backdrop to Blackpool’s finest tourist attraction: the Pleasure Beach. And if you’re looking for a family weekend experience, Pleasure Beach Blackpool is still second to none.

For the family. By the family.

Pleasure Beach Blackpool has remained in the same family ownership since it first opened its doors in 1896. Perhaps that’s why Blackpool Pleasure beach, unlike any other theme park in the country, has an unrivalled range of rides that caters for toddlers, young children and families. Yes, of course Pleasure Beach has an almost inexhaustible supply of white-knuckle rides for the most fearless visitors – not least the 213 foot climb that launches millions each year onto the Big One, the UK’s tallest rollercoaster – but what makes the Pleasure Beach truly impressive, and ideal for a family weekend break, is the number of other rides it crams into its relatively small space that will appeal to just about everyone.

So here, broken down into three categories, are five Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides just for the kids, five for all the family, and five for the more adventurous to give you an idea of the variety and depth of what’s on offer, and to give you the full family experience.

Child’s play

The bulk of the children’s rides at Pleasure Beach Blackpool are centred around the Beaver Creek area of the park where your children will find something to suit just about all ages and tastes. Here’s just a sample of some of the highlights you can expect on your family experience.

Ellie’s Caterpillar – there are coin-operated rides that are suitable for children younger than 2 years old, but the starting age for any of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s rides really is 2. And this ride is a lovely starting point for the youngest visitors (although they’ll need accompaniment if they are only 2). A swirling, bouncing, smiling caterpillar that induces vomiting in adults – but the kids just love it! An oldie-but-goody.

Beaver Creek Log Flume – trust Blackpool Pleasure Beach to create white-knuckle rides for kids. Pitched perfectly, this is a single drop log-flume for young children – and again the youngest should really be accompanied by an adult.

It is a perfect example of the Pleasure Beach doing what it does best when it comes to the family experience: scaring everybody just enough, but not too much. And why should it only be adults that get wet on rides?

Zipper Dipper – there are 12 rollercoasters at Pleasure Beach Blackpool, and two of them are situated in Beaver Creek. The Zipper Dipper is a classic ‘woody’ rollercoaster, built in 1934, with three terrific little dips to master.

Once again, adults need to ride with very young children, but this reviewer’s youngest is three and she adores this ride.

Alice in Wonderland – other parks in the UK spend the money on the ‘big’ adult rides and the kids get saddled with riding on the Ladybirds – hardly an event ride. Not so with Blackpool Pleasure Beach where some of the biggest event rides are for children. All the family will love this, but kids especially will adore climbing into a Cheshire cat and trundling off to follow Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Delightful.

Noah’s Ark – something else that the Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides seem to have mastered more than anyone else is the art of scaring the parents whilst the kids just carry on regardless. Noah’s Ark has been spooking grown-ups for decades whilst the kids just press on in search of the next surprise.

It’s a walk-through fun house that takes you in, out and around the titular boat. Full of twisted corridors, shaking stairways and spinning, sliding floors this is truly a family experience, not to mention the longest of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s rides.

It does feature total darkness and strobe lighting in some sections but has proven itself suitable for children of any age with accompaniment.

Keeping it in the family

It’s with this class of ride that Blackpool Pleasure Beach stamps its authority. None of the following are overly scary, although a couple of them do have height restrictions that would prevent very young children from riding. Details are below. It’s worth noting that this, again, is just a sample and there are so many family orientated rides at the Pleasure Beach that we’d be here all day listing them. These are the rides that make the most of your Pleasure Beach tickets; try them all once and then find your family riding them again and again.

Sir Hiram Maxim’s Flying Machines

So how much of a thrill can a ride that opened in 1904 really be?

Sir Hiram Maxim was a Victorian inventor with an impressive track record – although not necessarily in fairground rides. The inventor of the portable machine gun, the silencer and carbon filaments for lightbulbs he clearly had a spare weekend once where he came up with this: a thrill ride that, 104 years later, is still thrilling.

A majestic, historic, delightful family experience that, as it cranks up to full speed, will have every member of the family holding on just that little bit tighter…

River Caves

A classic family experience. Up to seven of you can ride in the same boat that takes you on a journey around the world and through history.

I know, I know; you’re expecting naff models and a highly underwhelming ride – but Pleasure Beach does it again with a rich experience that will have you riding again and again. We particularly love the Egyptian section – surprisingly impressive!

Ghost Train – most ghost trains lack a certain something. Like ghosts, for example. But not the Ghost Train at Pleasure Beach Blackpool. This was the first ride of its type in the world to be called a ‘ghost train’ and it’s certainly earned its moniker as this one really is haunted.

Don’t believe us? Then check out season one of ‘Most Haunted’ in which Yvette Fielding, Derek Acorah and the crew scare themselves silly on this most legendary of Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides.

Of course, the ride isn’t quite as frightening now that Derek Acorah’s left, but it’s still darn good fun.

It’s a personal thing, but the general level of Scooby-Doo style scaremongering within makes this ride suitable for young, although not very young, children. And they should be accompanied by an adult.

Valhalla – We’re upping the ante a little now. You need to be 117cm tall to ride Pleasure Beach Blackpool’s amazing £15m Valhalla, but since that’s only the height of your average seven year old we’re still saying that puts Valhalla squarely in family ride territory – although it’s certainly at the more extreme end.

This is the world’s longest dark ride – you’ll be riding for over six minutes as you journey through the halls of the Norse Gods where you’ll be confronted by rooms of ice, fire and lightening – oh, and the odd steep drop. At its heart this is just a log-flume - albeit an excellent one with stunning special effects. You will be impressed. You will be amazed. You will be soaked.

The Avalanche – another ride that sits at the more extreme end of ‘family’ territory although this reviewer’s six year old rode the Avalanche on our last visit to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and then rode it another three times because she loved it so much.

Avalanche is a bobsled ride down an ‘ice’ track. No rails, no power source – only momentum throws you down the course reaching some pretty hairy speeds before you reach the bottom.

Exhilarating, thrilling and another ride likely to scare the pants off the adults rather than the kids.

Hold on tight.

Irrespective of how good the family experience is, every theme park worth its salt only becomes worth its salt through being at the cutting edge of thrill rides. That’s something that Pleasure Beach Blackpool has managed spectacularly well throughout its history and continues to this day with its latest ride: Infusion.

The following Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides are only suitable for older kids and adults, but if your children are hitting double figures, and you want a family experience that will bring you all together, then try these for starters…

Infusion – Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s latest ride: it’s an inverted, looping coaster which means your seat sits beneath the track and your legs hang free as you’re whipped around a looping, corkscrewing track suspended above water.

Take your Crocs off before you set off, ’cause they won’t be on your feet when you get back.

It’s intense, wild, and occasionally wet – and it’ll really prove a test for the whole family.

Bling – where your family gets to pretend it’s a team of crash test dummies on a day out. This is one of Pleasure Beach Blackpool’s latest rides – and it’s just awesome!

At its core it’s basically a star on a stick. Each point of the star has five seats attached to it. Each seat pivots 360°. Each point of the star does likewise. And the whole thing rotates 360° too - whilst spinning on its axis. Your family sits in their seats as every bit of the machine loops and swirls and threatens to tear them limb from limb.

Sitting next to the climb of The Big One this tends to get rather lost in the mix, but it’s one of the Pleasure Beach’s finest rides, and one that will prove a real highlight of your family weekend. Give it ago and experience the strangely thrilling sensation of feeling like your head’s in the clouds whilst your legs are in Bolivia.

The Wild Mouse – who are we to argue with Wikipedia, which says of The Wild Mouse at Pleasure Beach Blackpool: “The Wild Mouse,…opened in 1958, is one of only 3 remaining wooden Wild Mouse coasters left in the world and is held in very high regard as one of the finest and extreme examples of Wild Mouse coaster.”

Extreme? You bet ya. It looks titchy, it’s squeezed into a corner of the Pleasure Beach between the Ghost Train and the River Caves and, with its cutesy mouse-ified carts, it looks like butter wouldn’t melt. And then you get on it and spend two minutes fearing that every second on it might be your last. Seriously, this ride is a beast. Deceptive, jarring, scarily rickety and fast as something that’s very fast and mouse-like, this will be the most extreme ride your family experiences whilst at the Pleasure Beach. You have been warned.

The Big One
– still the tallest rollercoaster in the UK and the second tallest in Europe, the Pepsi Max Big One climbs 213 feet above the promenade below and then tips your family into a near vertical drop that starts one of the best coaster experiences you’ll have anywhere in the world.

The Big One opened for business in 1994 and has been scaring the wits out of visitors ever since. It dominates the Blackpool skyline; you can see it from miles away; your family weekend break just won’t be complete unless you ride the Big One.

The Grand National
– no it’s not as beefy as The Big One, it’s not close to being as scary as The Wild Mouse and it’s ancient (it opened in 1935). So why in the name of everything that goes up and down would a ride you can’t even see from within the park (most of it is hidden behind Valhalla) be frequently judged the best rollercoaster in the UK, and one of the best in the world?

Well, let’s put it another way: just how good does a ride with that many disadvantages have to be to get to be so highly praised? The answer is about as good as the mighty ‘Nash – a ride that, if your family is brave enough to give it a go, will reward it with one of the very finest coaster experiences anywhere.

And what makes it even more spectacular for a family day out is that as you enter the ride you can split your family in two. Half go left, the others right, and you’ll then find yourself racing each other as two trains compete. At certain points you’re practically close enough to high-five each other. Don’t do that though, because you’ll want to hang on to the safety bar… There are only three rides of this type left anywhere in the world, and at Pleasure Beach Blackpool you’ll be on the best.

Pleasure Beach Blackpool – your family’s next great weekend break is waiting for you…

It’s worth noting that there are no age restrictions (bar the fact you have to be over 2 years old to ride any non-coin-operated ride) on any of the rides. Blackpool Pleasure Beach tickets or wristbands allow you to ride any ride provided you’re tall enough – which means there are no tricky decisions about the types of Pleasure Beach tickets you need for your family day out. If they’re big enough to ride, they’re big enough to ride.

So all you need to decide is what’s first? Have a great day.
