Cary Ordway asked:

looking or that quiet getaway on the Central California coast, consider Avila Beach, an idyllic little stretch of sand with comfortable accommodations nearby. Not that children would be unwelcome - Avila is a playground for all ages. But the new Avila Village Inn has now brought this destination up a notch or two for those seeking a special romantic beach getaway. The inn has pulled out all the stops to attract couples who want to pamper themselves as much as enjoy the natural beauties of the Central California coastline. About seven miles north of Pismo Beach the sign directs Highway 101 travelers to Avila Beach by way of a winding road that follows San Luis Creek down into a wooded ravine. About a mile before you get to the beach is Avila Village, a new development with condos, a few shops and, adjacent to the creek, the Avila Village Inn. While not actually on the beach, the inn’s wooded setting gives the property a quiet, reclusive feel. The developers of the hotel use the word “refined” to describe the many details and amenities that have been built into the 30 guest rooms. And our impression was that, indeed, this is one of those inns where you enjoy tasting the luxurious accommodations as much as experiencing the beach and other natural surroundings. This property has incorporated many of the design features now seen in newer upscale homes. Wet bars, granite countertops and fireplaces are in each room, while marble is used extensively throughout the shower and bathroom area. The pillow-top king beds both look and feel comfortable with down pillows, blankets and duvets. We especially enjoyed the 103-degree private spa waiting for us on our creekside balcony. If you’re so inclined, each room or suite has its own DVD player and guests are encouraged to check out free DVDs from the front desk. Those who are a little more active will welcome the fitness center that is just across the parking lot from the inn - perfect for working off those snacks, pastries and treats that are provided guests in both a welcoming basket and a breakfast basket the next day. Other details like tasteful art, mission-style furniture and a grand, sweeping staircase in the lobby area all add up to a sense of privilege - which, of course, is what it’s all about when you spend significant money to enjoy quality time with your loved one. A couple of minutes down the road from the inn is Avila Beach, a half-mile long beach area that is growing in popularity because of its more exclusive, almost Mediterranean feel. A few older hotels are situated near the beach, adjacent to some shops that are sprinkled throughout the tiny “downtown” area. There is evidence of new construction that we hear was made necessary from some oil leaks in the area; but the beach itself and the businesses along the beach seem unaffected. Avila Beach has three piers, including two that are public. It’s fun to walk out to the end of the pier where we enjoyed watching the surfers and dockside anglers while also taking in the spectacular views of the shoreline. There were only a few visitors enjoying the wide beach during our week-day January visit. Most people visiting seemed to be either couples, or college students from Cal Poly in nearby San Luis Obispo. From what we could see, Avila is perfect for getting away from people - although one suspects that might change on weekends and during summer months. But even with balmy 75-degree weather, we still felt like we’d stumbled across some small, little-known beach village somewhere in the Mediterranean. It was so deserted that it was hard for us to imagine that more than 28,000 people live in Avila Beach. All we can figure is that most must live well outside the few blocks adjacent to the beach. A larger, busier beach is just south of Avila at Pismo Beach. The views from Pismo Beach are spectacular and this horseshoe shaped beach seems to stretch on for miles and miles. It’s readily apparent that this isn’t the kind of beach where all you do is sit and soak up the sun; ATV and bike rentals are popular, as is sea kayaking and surfing. You can ride horses here or golf - this area is a favorite with retirees who make sure those golf courses get good and used — while fishing from the Pismo Pier also is popular. Just up from the pier is the downtown area - much bigger than the Avila Beach shopping area - where you can find a collection of shops and a choice of restaurants. Beyond this tourist area, Pismo Beach takes on the look of most any other town, although there is a high percentage of homes that are cottage-like and probably once used as vacation getaways. Driving around Pismo we discovered several beach access points, each with its own set of breathtaking views. These are great places to view the power of nature; during our visit, the surf along Pismo was pounding so hard it seemed as loud as a freight train. Another diversion while you’re visiting the Avila-Pismo Beach area is, of course, San Luis Obispo. We made a point of visiting the downtown area and found an excellent selection of shops and outdoor cafes, yet a home-town feel that made for a comfortable afternoon of browsing and exploring. It’s in San Luis Obispo that you’ll find the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, one of California’s historic missions. You can visit the padres’ residence, which is now a museum. San Luis Obispo is actually the hub for this area - a diverse region that has an incredible 100 wineries all within a short distance, and of course great beach communities. There are actually two distinct wine regions in this area - the San Luis Obispo region where the cool climate and marine sediment are conducive to growing Chardonnay grapes and, in the north, the Paso Robles region where the hot summers and limestone help grow the best zinfandels and rhone varietals. But then again, many visitors to the Central California coast are content to keep a low profile, perhaps traveling as far as the beach and a good dinner before returning to a cozy fireplace and soft music. Those are the visitors, no doubt, who will find Avila Beach and the new Avila Beach Village Inn, especially rewarding. AT A GLANCE WHERE: Avila Beach is about 200 miles north of Los Angeles and just north of Pismo Beach. WHAT: Avila Beach is an alternative to more expansive beaches and has a quieter, more exclusive feel. Only a few hotels are in the immediate area, although many more are located in nearby Pismo Beach. WHEN: The area has a moderate climate year-round. Summer can be hot at times, but is generally temperate. Winter is on the cool side. The area gets about 24 inches of rain per year. WHY: Scenic, charming and seemingly remote, yet only a few miles from shopping and restaurants in nearby cities. HOW: For more information on the Avila Village Inn, call the hotel at 805-627-1810 or visit www.avilavillageinn.com.

The sun-kissed breathtakingly beautiful white sandy beaches are perhaps the best known landmarks of San Diego. The dazzling stretch of sand, the open blue sky, and the rolling foaming waves of the ocean make San Diego a uniquely magnificent tourist attraction.

Some of the famous beaches in San Diego that you can’t afford to miss are:

- Blacks Beach

- Boneyard Beach

- Coronado Beach

- Cardiff State Beach

- Del Mar City Beach

- Imperial Beach

- La Jolla Cove

- Mission Beach

- Moonlight Beach

- Ocean Beach Dog Beach

- Windansea Beach

In any of these beaches of San Diego, you can relax in the picturesque surroundings and enjoy the salubrious climate year round. In fact, beaches are a source of pride and joy for both first-time visitors and life-long residents.

Apart from being the dividing line between land and sea, San Diego’s beaches offer much more excitement than merely swimming or sunbathing.

Major highlights of the beaches in San Diego:

Walking: If you enjoy walking on the sandy seashore, Mission Beach is the right choice. It is one of the beaches in San Diego where you can experience the best of beach life. The paved boardwalk that runs between the houses and the sandy seashore is the busiest during the afternoon.

Volleyball: An interesting volleyball match in a crowded beach is a common practice. No matter whether you want to play the game yourself or just want to watch others playing it, Mission Beach in San Diego is the place where you can enjoy both. At the southern part of Mission Beach, there are many well-maintained volleyball nets.

For Kids: Coronado Beach with its clean sand and gentle ways is the favorite amongst kids. The place remains colorful all throughout the year with various activities going around for kids. Parks like Glorietta Bay Park and Spreckels Park are quite popular among kids.

For Dogs: Most of the beaches don’t allow pets but there are some exceptions in San Diego. The Ocean Dog Beach and Del Mar’s Dog Beach are two popular beaches where dogs are allowed to run free the way they like. People love to come here with their pets.

Amusements: At the Belmont Park located in Mission Beach, one can enjoy thrilling rides at Great Dipper which is a classic carousel . Here one can enjoy swimming in the largest indoor heated swimming pool of Southern California.

Sandcastles: At the Imperial Beach, sand castle competition is a common practice. However, it need not be only a child’s sport. It is fun and interesting to see the “experts” build sand castles in San Diego’s Imperial Beach. There are many people who come here to try their hands at sand castle building.

Surfing: For visitors who are quite acquainted with surfing tactics, they would love to be at Windansea, which is one of the best surfing beaches in San Diego.

This is just a glimpse of the famous beaches in San Diego. Apart from these beaches, San Diego has dozens of attractions, activities and things to do. So, it’s obvious that to discover and enjoy San Diego one needs a leisurely holiday.

However, it is always important to stay at a San Diego hotel from where commuting to to the beaches and of course, San Diego’s various other tourist attractions is easy. There are plenty of budget hotels and motels in San Diego, California.

Tourists who would like to keep within a budget need not hunt for cheap motels here. The budget hotels in San Diego provide world-class services at budget rates and also offer attractive vacation rentals and packages. It is better to look up a good quality budget hotel in San Diego which is within a few minutes of distance from its white sandy beaches.

Bells Beach

Surfing is indeed one of the most popular beach and fun activities today. Whether people surf for recreational purposes only or as a sport, surfers are truly devoted to their art. Good surfing depends heavily on the waves—on the wave size and the wind direction, among others. Though there are lots of good beaches in the world, it is an irrefutable fact that there are only quite a few good beaches fit for surfing. And because surfing is enjoying popularity today, surfing beaches are a thriving economy. People all over the world come to surf and unwind on the most famous surf beaches. Among the best surfing beaches is the Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia. Bells Beach is internationally renowned for its beauty and potential for good surfing, not to mention world-class accommodations.

The beach

Making waves near Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, Bells Beach is known around the world as one of the best surfing beaches there is. The main break of Bells Beach is called the Bowl section or the “Bell’s Bowl.” The Bowl is a point break that works on any tide. It is said that the best wind on the area comes from the northwest direction, with the surf coming from groundswells. They say that it is best to surf in Bells Beach when the tide is rising at mid tide. Other close breaks in Bells Beach are Winkipop, Bird Rock, Jan Juc, Steps, and Boobs.

Bells Beach is said to have been named after the first pastoralist family who took care of the land in the middle of the 1800s. It is said that surfers were already coming to surf at Bells Beach as early as 1939. However, these surfers were having problems going to Bells Beach as there was no good road that goes to the beach. These changed in 1960s when Bells Beach became more accessible to the surfers through private and community efforts. Developments and many testimonials from surfers later, Bells Beach is now the internationally renowned surfing beach in the world. Avid surfers both from Australia and abroad have been coming to enjoy the waves of Bells Beach for years—and they are always satisfied.

Surfs up!

A testament of the reputation of Beach Bell as one of the best surfing beaches in the world is its annual hosting of the “Rip Curl Pro Surf and Music Festival.” As the world’s longest running surfing competition, it is also one of the world’s premier surfing competitions. First started in 1961, the completion has been attracting professional surfers around the world to vie for the honor of being champions. Whether you are a participant or a spectator, both the competition and the music festival are good ways to enjoy your holidays at Bells Beach.

At one with the waves

The Spirit of Surfing is a concept developed by surfer Peter Cuming in 1995 as an initiative of the Spirit of Surfing Trust. As the influx of surfers increase in Bells Beach, it was deemed necessary that the surfing community follow a set of code to guide them towards harmony in the beach. It is known that surfing is a fun and yet a potentially dangerous activity and safety will be ensured only if the people display acceptable behavior expected from a surfer. The Spirit of Surfing encourages harmony among the surfing community and the beach trough respect to the environment and the culture of the people and through the traditions of surfing. The surfing community of Bells Beach has summarized the Spirit of Surfing into three statements, which are “Respect the Ocean,” Respect the Land,” and “Respect Each Other.” Every surfer in Bells Beach is expected to adhere to the codes and principles of the Spirit of Surfing.

Cyprus is located south of Turkey and southeast of Greece, which accounts for the population of Cyprus being Turkish and Greek, as well as both being Greek Orthodox Christian and Muslim. The national languages are both Greek and Turkish. The history of the island is fascinating and there are many historical sites to visit. Tourism is the largest industry in Cyprus and their most valuable resource is their beautiful beaches.

The following is a list of the 10 best Cypriot beaches.

Diana Beach

This is an artificial sandy beach with a rocky bottom. Get out those surf shoes folks when walking in the water here because of the rocky bottom. Sun beds and umbrellas are available for rent here as well as scooters to get around.

Alagadi Turtle Beach

Alagadi Beach is a sandy beach with a rocky sea floor, however the water is shallow for quite a distance out making it great for swimming. Green turtles and Loggerhead turtles come up on the beach to lay their eggs during egg-laying season. During this time a portion of the beach is closed off to tourists.

Escape Beach

This beach has been carefully maintained and for this reason it is a favorite resort for families and singles alike. The fee to get into Escape Beach is 10YTL. There are all manner of water sports available here as well as volleyball. The nightlife is great here and there are several outdoors discos with European DJ’s.

Protaras Beach

This is the most popular beach in the Protaras municipality and there are a variety of water sports here for visitors to enjoy.

Ladies’ Mile Beach

This is a golden sandy beach with shallow, clear, and very calm waters. This beach is very safe for kids and is plentiful with water sports

Curium Beach

This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Cyprus. High above the beach is a Roman Amphitheater that has been restored. From this vantage you can watch the boats and water sports. The sea can be very rough at times but the beaches are gentle and favorable for swimmers. This beach can get a little crowded at times due to its popularity.

Pissouri Beach

This is a sandy shingle beach that is located in the village of Pissouri. There is a full compliment of water sports offered and there is even a scuba diving school for those that are inclined to dive. This is a beach that is rarely over crowded except on the weekends.

Governor’s Beach

Located between Larnaca and Limassol, this is a shallow beach that is great for small children to play and swim. There is also a white rocks area that is beautiful with great fishing and sailing at this beach.

Nissi Beach

Nissi Bay This is a beach located in the calm Nissi Bay, which provides shelter from the wind. This beautiful beach comes with magnificent views as well as having great, cafes, pubs, and a variety of water sports.

Fig Tree Bay Beach

This beach is aptly named because of a lone Fig Tree that grows just up from the Beach. This is a very popular beach in the Protaras District. Tourists find this beach difficult to locate as times because there are restaurants and hotels lining the beach. Look for the Salparo Hotel to the north and the Nausicaa Beach Hotel Apartments to the south.

Kirby Collins asked:

The first things one thinks of when someone says Florida is sunshine. Florida has a mild climate for most of the year and this makes it the ideal place to get out and have some fun in the sun. The best place to soak up some rays is at the beach and with over 1,000 miles of coastline Florida is the perfect place to grab a beach towel, some sunscreen and hit the sand. So you go to the beach and get your tan, but what about all those pesky tan lines? Well, good news, should you choose to go ‘au naturel’ at the beach here are a few things you should know.

Nude tanning is really ‘taking off’, pardon the pun, in Florida according to James Thorner of the St. Petersburg Times, one Florida county is gaining “status as the North American Capital of Nudism.” That county – Pasco – just north of Tampa does have more than its share of residents and visitors willing expose themselves. Another popular place on the east coast is Playalinda Beach it is in the Cape Canaveral National Seashore and is a federally owned beach. Whether by word of mouth or force of habit, this remote stretch of beach is commonly to be a nude beach. Feel free to visit but be warned, according to FloridaNaturist.org, “inappropriate” dress is a crime in Brevard County due to a swimwear ordinance. As a matter of fact, at the out-of-the-way, but traditionally nude Federal Beach, a South American tourist was arrested for wearing a French-cut bikini. Yet, along the same coastline two hundred miles to the south, Miami-Dade County operates a legal clothing-optional beach, where any given weekend, a thousand or more totally nude men and women frolic in the surf and sun.

So what’s a body to do? While there is no Federal law against nudity it is not a guaranteed right. This means that state, county and local laws can take precedence.

That still begs the question: Is it legal to sunbathe in the nude at Florida beaches? Like many legal questions, the answer is “it depends”, in this case it depends on where you are, so your best bet is to check the local laws and be sure you know what they are, both county and local.

Ok, you’ve decided to go, you’ve decided to get a tan without tan lines here are a few tips, especially if you’ve never been to a nudist beach before, here are some commmon guidelines:

Gawking is impolite. If you want to go to the nudist beach for a thrill, do everyone a favor and buy a magazine instead. Ask for people’s consent before taking their photograph nude, or simply leave your camera at home. If you’re sunbathing nude in a secluded area, leave a bathing suit on a rock to let others know they are approaching an unclothed person. If you’re uncomfortable having your suit out of reach, bring a spare. On a wide open beach, position yourself in the open so you can see people coming and put something on before they get there if you need to. Get dressed before you leave the nudist beach. Be friendly, but respect others’ rights to privacy. Avoid sexual activity. It’s illegal and offensive. Advances of an unwelcome or unwanted nature are not acceptable anywhere, and especially at a nudist beach. Be Prepared. Sometimes, the nudist beach doesn’t have any amenities. Bring water, food, towel, sunscreen and anything else you need. Keep the nudist beach clean. If you carried it in, carry it back out.

So if you’re still in the mood for goin’ nude here are some places around Florida you might ant to check out:

Air Force Beach, Palm Beach County Apollo Beach, Volusia County Haulover Beach Sunny Isles, Miami-Dade County Hobe Sound Jupiter Island, Martin County Blind Creek Beach Hutchinson Island, Martin County South Beach Miami Playalinda Beach, Brevard County St. Lucie Inlet St. Lucie State Reserve, Martin County

If you like to laze around the beaches, then this list of the best beaches in California will definitely be your best guide. This is a list for what we believe are the best beaches in California. Of all the beaches California has to offer, we think these are tops! If you can find better beaches in California, then we’ll eat out hat (metaphorically speaking)!

Malibu Lagoon Beach: A beautiful lagoon beach with 22 acres of wetlands, gardens and sandy beach. It’s considered one of the worlds premiere surfing beaches. On the east side of the Malibu Creek Bridge is the Malibu Pier, which is excellent for saltwater fishing. On the west side is a nature area.

Venice Beach: No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without a trip to this iconic beach. Street performers, artists and “the beautiful people” mingle and stroll all the way to Santa Monica along the famous boardwalk that runs through this inimitable California beach town.

El Capitan Beach: This shady, sandy, Santa Barbara beach features rocky tide pools along El Capitan Creek. It’s perfect for swimming, fishing, surfing, picnicking and camping. A long stairway gives access from the bluffs to beach and a bike trail connects the park with Refugio State Beach.

Ocean Beach: O.B. as the locals call it is a laid-back beach-community know for its surfers and liberal politics. It is an eclectic beach community with a leash free “dog beach”, a fishing pier, swimming, surfing and volleyball. It has separate swimming and surfing zones, which is definitely a good idea.

Rio Del Mar Beach: This long, sandy beach is found in the town of Aptos, California, in Santa Cruz County. It features fire rings and a barbecue and picnic area and is a popular summer beach. It is also the home to the “cement boat” a long stranded freighter ship.

Muir Beach: This beach is less than a half hour drive from San Francisco down scenic Hwy I. It’s one of the most glorious regions of Northern California in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Fishing, surfing and campfires are allowed, and there are many coastal trails above the beach for hikers to explore.

Black Sands Beach at Shelter Cove: This splendid black sand beach is a great place for Whale watching. Located north of the small hamlet of Shelter Cove in a remote region of the “Lost Coast”, it’s the trailhead for the famous King Range hike. This is a day only beach, so campers will have to head for the mountains.

La Jolla’s Beaches: La Jolla means “the jewel,” a fitting name for the precious beaches of La Jolla’s coast. Surfers prefer Windansea beach, harbor seals love the Children’s Pool, La Jolla Shores is popular for swimming and sunbathing, while the Cove is a favorite snorkeling spot.

Drake’s Beach: This vast stretch of white sand can be found at the Point Reyes National Seashore. The areas strong winds and choppy seas make it at little too violent for most swimmers, but sun worshippers will be delighted by the opportunity to work on their tans in a beautiful California outdoor hotspot.

Looking for a beachin’ good time? The state of Connecticut has some pretty great beaches, all practically at your doorstep. Most are open during the summer season, and come complete with amenities for public convenience. The fees are reasonable enough, and you can be sure to have a grand time, what with the list of summer events being organized and the wide range of activities present. All age ranges can be amply accommodated, from grandparents to month-old babies, for any length of stay desired. The beaches are usually run by their respective town councils, so any questions may be also be directed directly to them for more accurate information.

The Fairfield or Southwest Region of Connecticut has Calf Pasture Beach on Calf Pasture Road in Norwalk, the Fairfield Beaches, namely Jennings Beach, Lake Mohegan, Long Beach, Penfield Beach and Richards Beach. Jennings Beach is on South Benson Road, Lake Mohegan on Tahmore Road, Long Beach at Oak Bluff, Penfield Beach and Richards beach on Fairfield Beach Road. In Bridgeport, there’s Seaside Park Beach. Also a favorite is Sherwood Island State Park in Westport. A “swimming hole” called Weed Beach is located on Nearwater Lane, and is a naturally wooded, rather more secluded spot.

In the Central Region which includes Hartford, Connecticut has only one public beach open. Harvey’s Beach on Route 154 in Old Saybrook is available for general use during the summer season. There are, however, swimming holes that can be located throughout the area.

The Mystic or Eastern Region has some of New England’s most beautiful beaches, as well as state parks. Ocean Beach Park on Ocean Avenue in New London is one of Connecticut’s widest and most-equipped beach, complete with fun rides and restaurants inside. For more parks, there’s also Day Pond State Park on State Route 149 in Colchester, Hopeville Pond State Park off Route 138 in Griswold, Rocky Neck State Park off Route 156 in East Lyme. Misquamicut State Beach on Atlantic Avenue in Westerly is quite a large beach that is open only on weekends outside of the summer season. Sound View Beach on Hartford Avenue in Old Lyme is a smaller beach that is less crowded. A swimming hole called Watch Hill, a few meters away from Bay Street in the village of Watch Hill, is a distant but scenic destination if one wishes to avoid the summer boom.

The New Haven or South Central region probably has the most number of beaches in Connecticut, as well as parks and a lake. Lake Quonnipaug in Guilford is a freshwater venue, while Lighthouse Point Park on Lighthouse Road in New Haven offers more nature-related activities in addition to the regular swimming. Silver Sands State Park on Exit 35 in Milford is the sight of the infamous Captain Kidd’s treasure. Hammonasset State Park on Route 1 in Madison is the biggest beach in Connecticut, and is also supplied with a wide campsite for public use. Other beaches are: Bradley Point Beach on Exit 42 in West Haven, Clinton Town Beach on Waterside Lane in Clinton, Gulf Beach on Exit 39A in Milford, Morse Beach on Exit 42 in West Haven, Oak Street Beach also on Exit 42 in West Haven, and Sandy Point Beach at the same address. There is a swimming hole at Walnut Beach on Exit 34 in Milford, as well.

Take a pick of any of these and have a wonderful time with family or friends beach tripping and generally giving justice to the summer season.
