Every year, Dr. Beach, aka Dr. Stephen Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research issues his pronouncement of the best beaches in America. Generally, at least 3 of Florida’s beaches make the list. The anticipation of the pronouncement is keen, to say the least.

But the popularity of announcing best beaches has gone much beyond the trend began by Dr. Leatherman years ago.

There are pronouncers of best beaches sprouting up as quickly as beaches can be found.

The Travel Channel did a show not too long ago that had great visual appeal. Because it was a filmed feature and not reliant on still photography, the program really put Florida in a whole new light. The visuals were awesome and would make some question why they would ever leave the state of Florida to go to a beach anywhere else.

The show featured the top ten beaches in Florida and gave the reasons for why each was chosen to be on the list:

10 - Daytona Beach: activities and driving up and down the beach

9 - Sanibel Island (Gulf side): sea shell collecting

8 - Panama City: Spring Break

7 - Sandspur Beach (Bahia Honda): Nature preserve

6 - Smathers Beach (Key West): island-style

A life long beach lover and unofficial beach rater for many years and from many countries and continents, I would really have to question this rationale. I mean, seriously, would someone really go to a beach because they could drive their car up and down the beach?

I go to beaches to escape cars (and noise and traffic)!

Similarly, I don’t need a beach to go to a beautiful hotel, go shopping, party or mingle with the rich and famous. Cities are made for scenes like this.

So, were I to toss out numbers 10, 8 and 1, it would only leave 7 top beaches in Florida, moving Sanibel into much higher ranking…..where it should be.

Why, you ask?

Well, Sanibel is great for shelling, one of the top 3 beaches in the world for that activity. Because the Gulf is generally calm, it is also great for boating. It is bordered by a nature preserve, so it is fantastic for nature viewing. There are many points of seclusion on Sanibel’s beaches, including the popular Bowman’s Beach near our condo and house where one can find privacy and romantic ambiance (try doing that on Siesta Key, as lovely as the sand is!)

Using as a more valid comparison the reasons I believe that most people seek out beaches—- nature, beauty, boating, seclusion—- Sanibel would more than likely win the race.

Folly Beach is located just southeast of Charleston, SC and about a 15 minute drive from downtown.  It is a barrier island with 19 total square miles, with 6 of it being water.  Folly Beach has an eclectic mixture of older beach bungalows and the obvious newly constructed larger homes.  As you drive over the Folly River to get to the beach, you will find a colorful blend of surf shops, restaurants, pubs, and beach stores- all heavily visited in the summer months by tourists and locals alike.  Many of the locals here refer to Folly Beach as the “Edge of America”.  It has the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the Folly River on the backside of the island, with many tidal creeks and marsh that extend for miles.  This allows for great views and ocean breezes whether living on the “marsh side” of the island, or on the beach.

Folly Beach real estate is ever changing.  We’re seeing the transition from older single story beach homes to new, larger homes with all the upgrades and features any discreet buyer might want.  Here on Folly, you can choose a Key West style, small 1,000 square foot older beach house with character, or you can choose a large 4,000+ square foot oceanfront estate, with a walk to the beach from your backyard.  Historically, property values have climbed over 250% in the last 15 years, making real estate on Folly Beach a superb investment.

Affordability is a great advantage for Folly Beach.  Folly Beach enjoys some of the least expensive beach-living prices around Charleston.  Folly Beach homes for sale typically start in the low 400’s, with oceanfront homes starting just over 1 million.  Many find this to be an affordable spot to live, with close proximity to town, while still living at the beach.  The other islands that are in close proximity to downtown Charleston hold much higher prices than Folly Beach, making it an easy choice for some.

Another option that many are looking into is Folly Beach condos.  This affords a less expensive price tag, while still living the island lifestyle.  Condos are a great option for those that are planning on being at Folly Beach for only a certain amount of time during the year, or for those that don’t want to bother with the upkeep that a single family home requires.  Options for condos include condos on Folly Beach outside of the Folly River, condos on the Folly River, and condos with ocean views and/or beachfront condos.  Condos in general outside of the Folly River start in the 200’s.  These are all within biking distance to the ocean, but on the other side of the Folly River from the beach.  Examples of these would be Pelican Pointe Villas, Palmettos at Folly, and those on Little Oak Island.  Condos on the Folly River start in the 300’s.  These are within walking distance to the shops, restaurants, and the beach.  Mariners Cay, Marsh Winds, and Turn of River are fine examples of those on the Folly River.  Condos at the beach typically start in the 4 to 500’s.  There are the condos with an ocean view, and being within a couple hundred yards from the beach or closer.  These are Pavilion Watch, Ocean Pointe Villas, and Pier Pointe.  Oceanfront condos typically start in the 500-700’s, and can go into the millions.  These provide unobstructed views of the Atlantic.

There are however a number of great little seafood restaurants along the beach of Nai Harn and prices are generally very affordable. If you are looking for activities then you will also be happy at Nai Harn beach as there is a number of water sport companies located at this beach in Phuket.

Surin Beach

Another very popular Phuket beach among the expat population is Surin beach which is located between Phuket Laguna and Kamala beach. This long white sandy beach is also home to some of the finest seafood restaurants of Phuket. This Phuket beach generally only gets a bit crowded during the high season. There are a few Phuket resorts located in the Surin beach area however this area of the island is generally better known for its high end real estate projects.

Patong Beach

Patong beach is one of the most crowded Phuket beaches however many travelers certainly seem to prefer this. You will never get bored at Patong beach as there are plenty of beach vendors, massage ladies and water sport companies offering you jet skiing, water skiing and parasailing. If you enjoy shopping then please note that there are plenty of shops and boutiques which line the beach road of Patong.



Kata Beach

One of the most popular Phuket beaches is most certainly Kata beach which is located just south of Patong beach. Kata beach is one of the longest beaches of Phuket so you can enjoy up to a certain level of privacy when spending the day at Kata beach. The water of the Andaman Sea is generally very calm during the tourist high season. During the low season there are some waves and during this period of the year you will find local surfers hanging out at this wonderful Phuket beach.

Although people planning a vacation in Florida often concentrate on places like Walt Disney World, Miami Beach and Palm Beach, there are miles of white sand beaches which lie along both the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast of Florida. Unlike other Atlantic Coast beaches, Florida’s sandy stretches are actually increasing in size rather than decreasing due to erosion. If you were to walk the beaches of Florida at the rate of one mile per day, you would be enjoying the beaches for more than two and a half years. Although this sounds like an enjoyable way to visit the beaches of the state, for most people this is not feasible. Just a few of the Atlantic beaches of Florida can be noted here. Some are very well known, others are hideaway type expanses of beach where you can walk for miles without seeing another person. Traveling from north to the southern tip of the state, here are some favorite beaches.

JACKSONVILLE/AMELIA ISLAND/AMERICAN BEACH

Beaches in this area are generally wide and sand. They’re typically lined with sand dunes and have a rich natural history including bird locations such as at Huguenot Memorial Park and Fort Clinch State Park. Most beaches in this area do not require access tags. Specific beaches of interest are those near Jacksonville and Little Talbot Island State Park. American Beach is a well known historic and cultural landmark. Founded in 1920 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis, it is a mecca for blacks from across the South as a vacation site.

Accommodations and food are plentiful in the area especially along the main north-south route. You can find everything from Victorian tearooms to high rise resort developments in this section of the coast.

DAYTONA BEACH/NEW SMYRNA BEACH

This 23 mile stretch of the North Central Atlantic Coast is known for its fascinating mix of bustling action and quiet stretches of beach perfect for vacationing families. Most communities have streets that provide beach access. Ormond-By-the-Sea is an example of the largely residential beach community where you can enjoy the sand and surf. Ormond Beach is the location of the Birthplace of Speed Park where the first American timed trials took place.

Daytona Beach of course is well known for the emphasis on racing action, but this beach features an old-fashioned boardwalk, pedestrian only zones and lots of surf fishing and para-sailing.

Canaveral National Seashore provides a barrier island environment with more than twenty miles of undeveloped seashore. You can visit the Eldora House Historical Site and the Turtle Mound Archaeological Site.

There are plenty of accommodations in this stretch, suitable for families with children and mature beachcombers as well.

PALM BEACH

The beaches are wide and flat, lined by gently swaying palm trees and with sparkling white sand. This stretch is a nesting area for sea turtles. Until recently Jupiter Beach has been known only for sand dunes covered with sea grapes and Australian pines. It is now well on its way to being a prime resort area with developed beach areas, some wheelchair accessible areas, plus plenty of well-appointed lodging places and trendy restaurants where you can find any type of cuisine you desire.

Many of the beaches in this area feature lifeguards, picnic grounds, nature trails and even boardwalks where you can enjoy rollerblading or bicycling.

Although Palm Beach itself is known mostly as a playground for the wealthy, you can find much in the area for families on a budget as well. Anyone who considers shopping a recreational activity will be certain to enjoy this stretch of Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

FORT LAUDERDALE

Long known as the destination for college students on spring break from winter bound campuses in the north, the character of Fort Lauderdale has changed in the past few years. Strict policing of the miles of warm sands in the area have resulted in the beaches once again being suitable for families and young children. The wavewall and the promenade along the beach front is the perfect location for soaking up the atmosphere of the old city.
